A mainstay of the festival circuit and blues clubs, Marcia Ball is a captivating performer and a one-woman ambassador for the south Louisiana sound she loves. This, her third Rounder album, dates from 1989. It’s a mostly self-composed program that doesn’t quite capture the joy of her live shows, but comes close at times. Of all the new songs, “The Power of Love” is best. It’s a beautifully poised performance that grows slowly and inexorably from a two-minute vocal-piano intro. Some of the songs are built around the mournful swamp-pop chord changes; others around Cajun two-steps. The album closes with country star LeRoy Parnell’s “Red Hot,” which has since become one of her show-closers. ~Colin Escott, Amazon.com

Miles Davis - The Complete In A Silent Way Sessions
(1969/2004 Columbia/Legacy 3CD Box Set)

Artist: Miles Davis

Released: 1969/2004

Format: Eac/Ape/Cue/Full Covers
Of all the recording sessions completed by Miles Davis with his various bands, the sessions surrounding In a Silent Way Sessions in 1968 and 1969 are easily the most mysterious and enigmatic. For starters, they signified the completion of his transformation from acoustic to electric sound, and secondly, they marked the complete dissolution of the “second” quintet of Davis, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter, and Ron Carter that had begun on Filles de Kilimanjaro. The addition of Chick Corea as a second keyboard player and the replacement of Ron Carter with Dave Holland had changed the sound of the band’s dynamic, textural, and rhythmic palettes. The final break with Davis’ own previous musical sound happened when he added guitarist John McLaughlin and keyboardist/composer Joe Zawinul (for a temporary three-keyboard sound). The music on the In a Silent Way Sessions comes packaged three ways, all of it chronologically ordered: there is the material used to finish Filles de Kilimanjaro (”Mademoiselle Maby” and “Freon Brun”); material that has been, up until now, unissued in any form; session outtakes that appeared, in edited form, on Circle in the Round, Water Babies, and Directions; unissued and rejected takes; and finally, the music recorded for In a Silent Way itself as it was rehearsed, played, and finally, heavily edited into the released album, which also appears here. This was an ambitious undertaking, even if it only covered six months in the recording life of Davis (September 1968 through February 1969), whose musical inspirations and directions were crisscrossing as they were changing direction. With the exception of one tune, Davis or Zawinul composed everything here. Zawinul, though a jazz veteran, was discovering new ways to write — particularly since the advent of the electric piano — and proved to be a profound influence on his employer. The other heavy influence on Davis during this volatile, fertile period was Tony Williams, who was soaking up the pop music of the day, from the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s album (via a girlfriend’s suggestion) to the in-his-prime James Brown, to Jimi Hendrix. On Disc One, the set begins with the missing tracks from the quintet box set: “Mademoiselle Mabry” and “Frelon Brun.” Hearing them in this context, as the first complete expressions of Davis’ new sound, is revelatory. For the first time the three-chord vamp in “Mademoiselle Mabry” comes across as the fitting tribute to Hendrix it should have been, echoing the turnaround tags in “The Wind Cries Mary.” These tracks mark the entrance of Dave Holland into the band and the first marked absence of Hancock. The contrast in styles, from Hancock’s chunky, groove-laden chords and single-note runs and Corea’s deep, cerebral spaciousness, is remarkable; it’s a wonder they were issued on the same record at all. The simple, slow-jam riff the former tune evokes was, in some way, the cornerstone on which the material for these sessions would be built, while the latter provided the space and pace for its establishment. Review:
Writer-director Marc Lawrence’s romantic comedy gently satirizes the music industry’s past and present via Hugh Grant’s Alex Fletcher, a has-been Rock of the ’80s icon given another shot at the charts by young pop diva Cora Corman (newcomer Haley Bennett). Grant gives some surprisingly credible–if often gently tongue-in-cheek–performances in his musical debut; indeed, he carries better than half the soundtrack with his earnest vocal charms. The production gets key help from Fountain of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger, who contributes a delicious, loving send-up of Wham! courtesy of “Meaningless Kiss,” the emotive piano confessional “Don’t Write Me Off,” and two versions of “Way Back into Love,” the comeback ballad/duet that drives the story line. A playful demo version of the latter pairs Grant with co-star Drew Barrymore (playing the florist who becomes Fletcher’s unlikely songwriting foil), while Grant’s ultimate duet with young Bennett evokes contemporary pop conceits with a keen, affectionate flair that also graces the young singer’s Britney-esque “Buddha’s Delight,” “Slam,” and the more obviously snarky “Entering Bootytown.” Rounding out the collection are a pair of complimentary tracks by Swedish pop acts: The Sounds’ bouncy “Tony the Beat” and the club-slinky groove of Teddybears’ “Different Sound.” Highlighted by Grant’s sympathetic vocals and a knowing musical sensibility that never quite lapses into mere parody, it’s a pop-lover’s delight from start to finish.

This ambitious, 10-track CD by the Spanish vocalist/composer Alejandro Sanz translates into English as The Train of Moments. Sanz’s Andalusian-aired, flamenco-flavored vocals are backed by co-producer Lulo Perez’s evocative synth arrangements and urban beats–with the help of Mana drummer, Alex Gonzalez, and Ketama vocalist Antonio Carmona–and other hip collaborations. Sanz teams up with Shakira on the spare, Brazilianized track “Te lo Agradezco, Pero No” and mixes it up with the rap duo Calle 13 and guitarist Juanes on the hip-hop/reggaeton-friendly ode to female seduction “La Peleita.” The martial and moody video single “A la Primera Persona” contrasts with the rock-ish “Se Molestan” and the jazz-tinged piano chords on “Donde Convergemos.” Sanz has been a pan-Latino powerhouse for over 15 years, and this recording will no doubt solidify and expand his position in that pantheon. –Eugene Holley, Jr.

You might be familiar with Matt Berry from the British comedy shows The IT Crowd, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace and The Mighty Boosh, and he has just released this new album as a side project, featuring guest vocals from Paul McCartney on track 10.
Although he has been in some great comedy shows this album is not meant to be funny as such, although very quirky with many interesting instruments and sounds. Sounds curious I know - it’s worth a listen.
